This quote, made famous in the 1993 film Tombstone, staring Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday, has been added to everything from coffee mugs, t-shirts and tattoos. Problem is most people do not know where the saying comes from or what it means. In the movie Doc Holliday says "I'm your Huckleberry" to Jonny Ringo as an acceptance for a gunfight. However, the actual word should have been "Huckle Bearer."
A huckle is actually the name of the handles on the side of a casket. Today we say "Pall Bearers" but in times past it was "Huckle Bearer." Therefore when someone would say "I'll be your Huckle Bearer" they would be saying, I'll help carry your burdens or help you with your troubles.
So WHY is this at the top of my bio page? Well I'm here to be your Huckle Bearer. What troubles do you need help with? And just as Doc Holliday was not "on staff" or a sworn deputy he was there to partner with Wyatt Earp during times of need.
I grew up just a simple farm boy in west Texas. The second oldest of seven children. My school, which literally sat in a corn field, had fifty students from kindergarten to eighth grade and the teachers and staff lived onsite. Being raised in this remote northwestern part of Texas it was natural that I developed a love for western books by Louis Lamour and Zane Grey and watching old westerns every Saturday morning on our one and only black and white TV set. The one with foil-wrapped rabbit ears. Like many young boys of my era, I played cowboys and Indians, Sherriff and Posse, etc. complete with a pair of faux pearl handled six shooter cap guns, and a straw hat.
Whereas my education and career paths took unusual twists and turns (law enforcement, a psychology degree, car sales, military/government intelligence, and more) it has allowed me diverse experiences and a wide range of knowledge. Once I began working incyber security, I quickly realized it was the wild west, and I could finally be the heroes from my childhood. They were no longer in some distant past but alive and well here in my time and I could join their ranks. I've had the pleasure of developing novices into experts and helping mentor cyber security leaders in all industries. I was a member of the Federal Critical Infrastructure Program Working Group and one of the founding members who developed the NIST CSF Implementation Guide for HealthCare.
With over 20 years’ experience in cyber security, I rally CISOs and CIOs to command the chaos of cybersecurity, wrangling the best talent and resources needed to safeguard their digital frontiers efficiently and simply.
